Our Moment in History

As you all know, last night was one that will go down in the books. Though it was cause for great celebration, we must remember that for the step forward our country took- our state took two steps back.

Last night a man who less than a century ago would have been seated in the back of the bus not only come up front- but he became the driver of that bus! Of course I am talking about our President Elect, Barack Obama. He won with grace, humility and continued to try to unite our country even as he won by a landslide.

But, on that bus there are people who fought for years for their rights not to be forced to the back of the bus. They have been making progress and finally got the rights that they are owed by this country. Last night our state stripped them of their rights and told them to get their asses to the back of the bus again. Californians let themselves get manipulated by those funding Prop 8, and continue to not understand SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE. I am deeply dissapointed because California should have set an example for the rest of the 49 states and it didn't.

The second step backwards was Prop 4 getting approved. Yes, parents should be informed- but not by the government. IT IS THEIR JOB TO KNOW WHAT THEIR KIDS ARE UP TO. This puts so many underage girls in danger. If they are pregnant at 14- they probably already don't have the best relationship with their parents. If these girls don't want the government telling their parents they will find another way not to have the baby. This is the predicament this proposition has put our girls in- either face her parents (that can potentially can put her life at risk) or get an illegal, unsafe abortion that does put her life at risk.

So, while we celebrate this moment in history that shows us how far we have come- remember we still have a long way to go. This is not the end- the people WILL take back their rights.
